Shaibu Affirms Edo Govt’s Commitment to Medical Excellence


…charges medical inductees to serve humanity, unveils Edo University Teaching Hospital.


Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has reiterated the commitment of the present administration towards supporting Edo State University, Uzairue in the training of its medical students.


The Deputy Governor made the remarks at the maiden oath-taking ceremony of new physician-inductees of the College of Medical Sciences of the state-owned University, at the Aliko Dangote Auditorium of the institution in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.


A female inductee, Dr. Odekunle Nusirat Abolanle, emerged as the best graduating student.

Shaibu charged the new medical doctors to live up to the sacred ethics of the medical profession by dedicating themselves to the service of humanity.

“I see you as pastors who are called to sacred service; you have been called to serve humanity”.


He advised the medical doctors to be worthy ambassadors of Edo University, Uzaiue – noting that their achievements should reflect in character and service to the people.

“Do not let the problems of our country affect your call. Saving lives should be your priority, before the problems of Nigeria”.

“I am particularly happy that the motion I moved for the establishment of three tertiary institutions in Edo State, while I was a member of Edo State House Of Assembly are producing the desired results. One of them is Edo University, Uzairue. Today, we have 37 doctors, trained by this institution and fully inducted”.

“I congratulate your parents who have made this possible”, Shaibu added. The Deputy Governor later moved to Auchi where he unveiled the Edo University Teaching Hospital.


The Provost, the College of Medical Sciences of the University, Prof, Sylvester Idogun, praised the efforts of parents and lecturers for making the event possible. He congratulated the new medical doctors for overcoming the difficulties that accompanied their training while urging them to work hard, even as he pleaded with the Edo State Government, to intensify efforts towards the quick completion of the University’s Teaching Hospital.


In a lecture titled: “the evolution and ethical implications of physicians pledge as Guide for medical practitioners”, the President, of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, Prof. Uchechukwu Ojinmah Roland, challenged the inductees to embrace self-development and strive for excellence.

He admonished the new doctors to shun unethical practices such as carrying out procedures, without examining patients, among others.

Shortly before the induction and oath-taking, the Registrar, Medical Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN, Dr. T.A.B Sanusi called on the graduands to abide by the ethical standards of the profession, stressing that the hallmark of a good doctor is professionalism.


He warned them to avoid sharp practices, adding that the Council will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against defaulters.

There was, however, the presentation of the Award of Excellence to Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, for their outstanding contributions to the development of Edo State University, Uzairue.


Others who received awards were staff of the college for their selfless service. They include Dr. Aisha Shekubi, Dr. Adaora Obiagun, Mr. Queen Okoro and Mrs. Patience Okoji.

Dignitaries who were also awarded for their contribution were the Provost, College of Medical Sciences, Edo State University, Uzairue, Prof. Sylvester Idogun and President, Nigeria Medical Association, Prof. Uchechukwu Roland.


Some of the medical doctors who spoke were unanimous in expressing appreciation to God for scaling through the hurdles.
