Yucateco’s boxing trials impress Port Harcourt residents

…Says outfit should be encouraged to do more for Nigerian boxing

Following a successful national trial in Lagos, Yucateco Boxing Promotions organizers of the first ever boxing league in Nigeria made another stop in Port Harcourt River state for the South-south zone of the trails ahead of season 2 of the Yucateco boxing league.

The event held Saturday, June 8th at the state boxing gymnasium in Port-Harcourt attracted over 200 pugilists from across the country.

According to the technical director of the Yucateco boxing league Babatunde Laguda, the Port Harcourt trails are a mirror of what played out in Lagos during the southwest event at the National Stadium in Surulere.

Laguda said several talented boxers were spotted at the trials in Port Harcourt as expected.

“It was nothing short of our expectations in Rivers state, the boxers turned out in their numbers and they gave a good account of themselves”

“What we did was to widen the scope to enable the respective boxing clubs that will participate in Season 2 of the boxing league scouts for new talents that could add to their list of pugilists ahead of the league proper”

“I must profoundly thank the people of Port Harcourt for their support all through the event, they embraced and lauded the initiative and this has given us reasons to return to the city in the course of the league”

The Chief executive officer of Yucateco boxing promotions Hon. Omonlei Yakubu Imadu, in a chart with our correspondence, said all is in place to ensure season 2 of the boxing league surpasses all that was achieved in the maiden edition.

“I am very confident we are going to have a more improved season this time, we have put in place an increased prize money of 50m naira for the eventual champion, and the most outstanding boxers in each weight category will receive as much as 2m naira “

“We have also worked on other technicalities to further elevate the standard of the league, boxing has never had it this good in Nigeria I must tell you”

Twelve (12) boxing clubs will participate in Season 2 of the Yucateco boxing league which gets on the way later this month.
