President of the Boxing Promoters Association of Nigeria (BPAN) Omonlei Yakubu Imadu has praised the Lagos state government for rewarding the state’s athletes to the 2024 National Youth Games in Asaba Delta State. Imadu who was part of the top dignitaries at the State House in Ikeja on Tuesday for a State reception organized for the athletes, praised the initiative as a welcome development that should be sustained.
The high point of the event was the announcement of a financial reward for the athletes by the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, representing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the lead speaker. The number two citizen of the state revealed that the Gold medalists would receive the sum of 200,000 naira each, the Silver medalists would get 150,000, and the bronze medalists would pocket 100,000 respectively. The coaches will also receive 100,000 naira each for their contributions.
In his address to reporters on the sideline of the event, the CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions extolled the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, for his goals for grassroots sports development in the state.
“I think the DG Lagos State Sports Commission Mr Lakan Fatodu also deserves plenty of plaudits for creating a system that enables the coaches and athletes to give their very best, in less than a year on the saddle he was able to achieve second place finish at the Youth Games, trust me, Lagos state would finish first at the next edition under his very pragmatic guidance”.
