NFF approves change of name as Nigeria Professional Football League becomes Nigeria Premier Football League

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has given the green light to rename the nation’s top-flight football league.

The decision, made during the 79th NFF Annual General Assembly in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, officially changed the league’s name from the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.

This marks a significant decision, as only the NFF Congress had the authority to alter the league’s name, despite previous efforts by the newly formed Nigeria Premier League board to introduce a new logo and name for the league.

Previously, the league was known as the “Nigeria Premier League” from 1993 to 2000 and later from 2003 to 2013. It also went by the names “Nigerian Premiership” (2000–2003), “Nigerian Professional League” (1990–1993), Nigerian National League – First Division (1979–1990), and “the (Nigerian) National League” or “Nigerian Football League” (1972–1979).

More recently, it was referred to as the “Nigeria Professional Football League” from 2014 to 2023.
